Last week’s QotW proved to be the most popular yet, with very nearly 500 BaT’rs commenting on. The most popular marques quoted–by far–were BMW and Porsche, probably because they’re among the most historically consistent makers of excellent driver’s cars, at least within the scope of the sub-exotic and relatively achievable. Other notable votes included those for a garage stuffed full of George Barris creations (including the Batmobile, KITT, and the Beverly Hillbillies truck), five mono-mirror Testarossas in rainbow colors, one each of all four Miata generations, plus a -spec car, Swiss-Italian-American Monteverdis, and Spanish Bultaco two-wheelers, not to mention all who chose to disregard the rules and simply list five different vehicles from five different manufacturers–you rebels. Click through to read the $25 BaT gift certificate winner, the honorable mentions, and of course a brand-new Question of the Week. Is happening today, October 14th, 2018, and our man Blake Z. Rong is on the scene in the City of Brotherly Love in a neon Surf Style windbreaker–stay tuned for his photos and words in an upcoming Event Coverage story. In the meantime, here’s one he wrote earlier, covering perhaps the raddest of Radwood Era tuners, Strosek.
Audi 5000, -BaT Vittorio Strosek founded the tuning company that bears his name in 1982, in Utting am Ammersee, about 45 kilometers outside Munich. Strosek had studied under the tutelage of, arguably one of the most unconventional industrial designers of the 20th century. I begin this explanatory story with another explanation.
Familiarize yourself with the futuristic genius of Colani’s oeuvre–, a with a Lamborghini Miura’s engine. Then, look at Strosek’s wild Porsche 911s, twin-supercharged 928s, oval-lit speedster headlights and rounded, bulbous shapes, and you will feel the same vibe as, say, Colani’s inspired by a megalodon shark. Strosek’s body-kitted creations echo a similar organic optimism. Two titans of Eighties futurism, streamlined and flamboyant, tugging at the parts of our mind that wished that we could inherit such a long-lost future. Where Colani dreamed of the stars–of with wings like cherry blossom pedals–Strosek applied the same principles to the “,” and the world is more interesting for the result. The following five cars seem to exemplify the story of Strosek.
We were thrilled to be back this year for the 14th annual Japanese Classic Car Show. JCCS features an eclectic mix of Japanese classics – cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, race cars, scooters – from the ’50s through the ’90s.
It is an unpretentious show and we appreciate that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. A wide variety of cars in various condition are welcomed on the lawn – stock, modified, restored, driven, they are all there and a pleasure to see. The diversity is what makes this event so special, seeing a row of Mazda RX-3s staged near a Honda Monkey after perusing the MK4 Supras is a unique experience to say the least. This 1954 Chevrolet Corvette (chassis E54S003240) is said to have been off the road for nearly half a century now, but remains largely complete and still runs and drives thanks to regular starting over the years. This second-year car’s fiberglass still needs some finishing work before new paint can be laid down, but factory Polo White seems like it’d be a good choice once ready.
Despite requiring more prep, bodywork does look good overall, with no major cracks or other issues, including on the removable hardtop, while brightwork looks to retain a nice shine. The interior could benefit from some TLC as well, but again, what’s there looks entirely serviceable and largely complete as-is. Unsurprisingly brakes are said to need work, but with just 3,640 ’54 Vettes made, each surviving example is important, and this one looks like a far better restoration candidate than many we come across. Find it in DeKalb, Illinois with an unmet opening bid of $38,500 and no additional reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. For this submission. This 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero racer is said to have competed at that year’s Granada-Dakar Rally, with Bruno Saby and co-driver Dominique Serieys driving it to seventh in class according to. Though called a Pajero, the vehicle is actually purpose-built with a fiberglass body over a tube frame and turbo twin-cam four power to all four wheels.
The ad is very short on details, mentioning neither post-race history nor current running condition, but the vehicle does look to be complete and serviceable, if dusty with sand. Hopefully most of its mechanicals are production-based, and someone living near a desert can exercise it regularly in the dunes. Find it in Izegem, Belgium for 84,950 euros ($98k USD today). Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. For this submission. Percy jackson the ultimate guide look inside.
